Joyce Marie Strait, 79, of Junction City, Kansas, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Wednesday November 20th, 2019, after many prolonged illnesses.
Joyce went peacefully, with her husband of 60 years, by her side at the Valley View Senior Life home.
Her husband Richard S. Strait served in the United States Army for 21 + years, served 2 tours in Vietnam, and was a two time Purple Heart recipient. Richard and his wife retired from Fort Riley in 1978 and with their two children remained in Junction City.
Joyce loved to be in the outdoors, and was an avid horsewoman. She and her husband Richard were long time members of the Fort Riley riding club, and members of the Geary County Sheriff’s posse. The couple also featured their horses, Chants and Babe, in many a parade in Junction City.
Joyce had a labor of love for dogs too, and had many different breeds throughout her lifetime, with her more recent being her beloved “Sunshine” a Golden Retriever. It was not unusual for Joyce to be singing “You are my Sunshine my only Sunshine”, referring to her Golden.
Joyce also enjoyed camping, boating, and water skiing with her family at nearby Milford Lake. Joyce loved Kansas, and was always in awe of its beautiful sunsets, and the openness of the plains.
Joyce was born Joyce Marie Slater on July 8th, 1940 in Bath, New York, to Fordyce and Natholie Slater, both of whom preceded her in death.
Joyce has three siblings; Lawrence (Marsha) Slater of Pulteney, New York, Susan (Philip) Slater Gelder of Penfield, New York, and Theresa (Jeff) Slater Harrington, of Baltimore, Maryland.
She is survived by her husband Richard S. Strait, 78, of Junction City, Kansas, daughter Deborah A. Strait, of Rockford, Illinois, son David R. (Nancy) Strait of Bath, New York, and her two grandchildren Joshua D. Strait, and Courtney E. Strait, both of Bath, New York.
No services will be held at this time; however a “Celebration of life” is being planned for Joyce, and will be announced in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Joyce.
The family would like to convey their thanks and appreciation to friends, neighbors, the JC Naz, Valley View Senior Life and its staff, Accord Hospice, and many, many family members. All of you have been so very wonderful in your support, prayers, and words of encouragement to us in this most difficult time. Our family is so very blessed by all.
Joyce is in Heaven, and we will miss her dearly, but know we will be reunited some day and what a joyous reunion that will be.
