Woodrow W. Haines, 92, Junction City, passed away on August 24, 2010 at Valley View Senior Life Center. Cremation has taken place with the assistance of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel.
Mr. Haines was born July 27, 1918, Arlington, MD to William B. and Flora (Gray) Haines. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for seven years before joining the U. S. Army January 20, 1942.
He was a POW of the Korean War in 1951 and he received the Purple Heart, Three Bronze Stars, the Silver Star, Good Conduct Medal with 4 Clasps, American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired as a First SGT at Fort Riley, KS May 31, 1964. He went to work for Civil Service at the Commissary in 1966 until he retired.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda and husband Gary Chappel of South Milwaukee, WI, one grandson, Jonathan Chappel and great-granddaughter, Noelle Chappel also of South Milwaukee, WI and friends Jerry and Gail Dye, Mary Dye and Megan "Elaine" Rose all of Junction City, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and five sisters.
