William J. "Bill" Malstead, Sr., 82 of Junction City, passed away on Fri., July 30, 2004 at the Geary Community Hospital in Junction City. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Wed., Aug. 4, 2004 at the St. Xavier Catholic Church with the inurnment to follow at St. Marys Cemetery. Father Al Brungardt will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Tues., Aug. 3, 2004 at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel with the vigil service at 7:30 p.m.. Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Xavier Catholic Church, 218 N. Washington, Junction City, Kansas 66441.
Bill was born Dec. 7, 1921 in Bellville, KS., the son of Christopher O. and Zella M. Buehler Malstead. He spent about 20 years in Bellville and also graduated from Belleville High School.
He worked in Auto Sales and was Vice-President of Emery Leasing Company for 15 years until retirement on Sept. 1, 1985. Along with his wife Mary he owned the JC Office Supply for over 25 years. He was in the Army and was stationed at Fort Hood from March 1945 to July 1946. In his younger days he had a private pilots license and loved flying with Mary across the country. In his spare time he loved to play golf and he was also a home builder. He enjoyed the company of his "Coffee Clutch Buddies". He was a member of the St. Xavier Catholic Church, American Legion and AARP.
He married Mary A. Smith on July 11, 1941 in Belleville, KS, she preceded him in death on April 17, 1999.
Survivors include two daughters, Joetta Ryan of Ft. Worth, TX and Mary Louise Dillon of Manhattan; two half-sisters, Jennie Herndon and Bea Whitlow, both of Kansas City, MO.; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, William J. Malstead, Jr and one granddaughter, Brenda Mary Ryan.
