Funeral services for William J. Horton Sr., age 91, of Junction City, Kansas, will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 11 am at the Second Missionary Baptist Church, 10th and Clay Street, Junction City, Kansas. Mr. Horton passed away on January 21, 2013 and will lie in state one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial with full military honors will take place following the service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. A visitation will be held 6-8 pm Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Funeral Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue.
William was born on April 25, 1921, in Lee County, Georgia, the son of General and Lizzie Walker Horton. He graduated from Gillespie Seldon High School, Cordele, Georgia in 1942. William James Horton and Annie Louise Moore were joined together in the State of Holy Matrimony on March 26, 1945.
To this union three children were born, William James Horton, Jr. and twin brother, Raymond Jerome Horton, (deceased) and Frederick L. Horton. Also, three grandchildren, Raymond Jerome Horton II, (deceased), Reagan Elizabeth Horton and Carl James Horton, and two great grandchildren, Gabrielle Soledad Horton-Gaona and Viveka Ann Horton. His Godchildren included Cencil and Atwill O'Neal, Napolean and Evelyn Kimbrough. Godgrandchildren included Darryl and Terrence Golden and Dushan Carter, Renee Carter and family.
William James Horton Sr. served in the United States Army for twenty years and six months. His military career took him to many different countries and he chose his retirement home as Junction City, Kansas. After retiring from the military, he started his own local trucking business (1963-1979) which he managed until he turned it over to his youngest son Fred. Other post-military retirement work included: Federal Civil Service from 1965 to 1985 at Fort Riley and the Geary County Senior Citizen Center from 1991-1996 in Junction City, Kansas.
Mr. Horton joined Second Missionary Baptist Church in 1962 and became an active member. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1965 and served as Usher, Church School Teacher, Departmental Church School Superintendent, Trustee Board Chairperson, Layman President at the local and district levels. He received the Man of the Year Award from the Kansas State Layman Department.
His passion was church, family, fishing and hunting.
