William Edward "Bill" Schnackenberg, 86, of Junction City, died Sept. 14, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living of Junction City. Bill was born July 4, 1929 in Custer County, Nebraska, the son of Eduard & Margaret (Ostendorf) Schnackenberg.
Bill attended schools in Farnam, Neb. and graduated from Farnam High School. He later graduated from Kearney State College in Kearney, Neb.
Bill entered the U.S. Marine Corp. in 1952 and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge as a Sergeant in the Marines in 1954, Bill taught and coached in Nebraska for a short time, and later came to Junction City, where he was a long time Biology teacher at Junction City High School. He also managed Camp Tomah Shinga, south of Junction City. Bill was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Science Dept. Assn. at Junction City High School, the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts in Bella Vista, Arkansas, the Kansas-National Education Assn., and the Kansas Who's Who.
Bill married Della Lehman on Aug. 15, 1948 in Gothenburg, Nebraska. After his retirement, Bill and Della lived for a time in Bella Vista, Arkansas, until Della's death on Sept. 30, 2009. Bill then moved back to Junction City, where he resided until his death.
Survivors include: a son, Paul Schnackenberg, Dallas, TX; 2 daughters, Kathy Bassett and her husband Gale, Junction City, Kristine Wheeler and her husband Scott, Augusta; and Sue Hourigan, who Bill and Della treated as a daughter; 2 sisters, Irene Viter, Gothenburg, Neb., and Mary Etlicher and her husband Laurel, Barron, WI; 5 grandchildren, Jacob Bassett and his wife Shanna, Josh Bassett, all of Rogers, Arkansas, Jered Wheeler and Hannah Wheeler, both of Augusta, and Gracie Schnackenberg, Dallas, TX; and a great-granddaughter, Monroe Bassett, Rogers, Arkansas. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert Schnackenberg.
At the request of Bill, his body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015 at Faith Lutheran Church in Junction City, with Pastor Cynthia Schnaath presiding. Following the service, the family is hosting a luncheon at the Dining Hall at Camp Tomah Shinga, 7821 E. Lyons Creek Rd., Junction City.
The Nebraska services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, Sept. 21, 2015 at the American Lutheran Church, Gothenburg, Nebraska, with Pastor Lonna Grabenstein presiding. Inurnment will be in the Gothenburg City Cemetery, Gothenburg. Full military honors will be provided by the U.S. Marine Honor Guard at the cemetery.
