Wilbur E. Short, 82, of Junction City, died on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at the Valley View Senior Life Center. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. in Junction City. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 21, 2012 also at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel with Pastor Laurie Barnes officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, Kansas. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Disabled American Veterans, VA Hospital Bldg. #24 RM 106G, 2200 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66222.
Wilbur was born July 24, 1930, in Chautauqua, KS, the son of Leo and Georgia Ann (Perkins) Short.
Wilbur began his military career in the Army Air Corps as a Firefighter in October 1947. He retired June 1968 as an Air Force Master Sergeant. During Wilbur's career he spent 2 tours in Vietnam, 1 tour in the Azores, 1 tour in Alaska as well as numerous duty stations across the continental United States. He received several awards to include Top Airmen of the 7th Fighter Wing and the Bronze Star Medal. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked over 20 years for the City of Wichita as the Chief Building Inspector. He then served as the Codes Administrator for the City of Junction City from April 1989 until his final retirement in May 1995.
Wilbur enjoyed many hobbies in addition to his military and civilian careers to include flying, photography, dancing, and cutting hair. He also loved all electronic devices and made frequent trips to Radio Shack. He was extremely hard-working and always had an encouraging word. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He married his wife Mary Joan (Hahn) Short, in Lyons, Kansas on November 23, 1950.
Survivors include his wife: Mary Joan Short, of Junction City; 2 siblings: Bob Short and his wife Hope, of Houston, TX, and Betty Rogers and her husband Clint, of Ventura, CA; 2 children: Thomas E. Short and Bonita Watkins, both of Wichita; 3 grandchildren: Barbara Mottas, Steven Watkins, and Jeffrey Amick. He was also survived by 5 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Leo Short, Jr., his daughter, Linda Amick, and granddaughter, Melissa Amick.
