Wilbert Bleam

Wilbert F. Bleam, 82, of Manhattan, died Tuesday morning, July 4, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan following a brief illness.

Wilbert was born October 10, 1923 in Osborn, Kansas, the oldest son of Dewey Lincoln and Ester Edna (Mischler) Bleam. A graduate of Leavenworth High School, Leavenworth Kansas, he enlisted in the United States Army in June 1943, serving 26 months in the Pacific Theater (India) with the 853rd Engineer Aviation Battalion. Two years after being discharged, Wilbert married Mary Kathryn Bosshammer on February 22, 1948. They farmed near Leavenworth until the summer of 1956 at which time Wilbert joined the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, now the Natural Resource Conservation Service, as a Civil Engineering Technician. Throughout 33 years with the SCS, first in Jetmore and later Junction City, Wilbert prepared surveys for the construction of ponds, waterways, terraces and other earthen structures; advised landowners on the prevention of soil erosion and the conservation of water; and trained new SCS field technicians. Wilbert and Mary retired in Junction City, Kansas in 1989 where they lived until Mary's death in 1999 at which time Wilbert moved to Meadow Lark Hills in Manhattan, Kansas.

Wilbert was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder during the years he lived in Jetmore and Junction City. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club while he lived in Junction City. Wilbert was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Mary Margaret Millard and is survived by his son, William F. Bleam of Madison, Wisconsin and his youngest daughter, Kathryn L. Bleam of Manhattan. Six grand children and six great grand children also survive Wilbert.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 7 at the First Presbyterian Church of Manhattan (801 Leavenworth Street).
