Funeral services for Wayne Berneking, 78, of Junction City will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 28 at the Alida-Upland Cooperative Parish. Burial will follow at Alida Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, October 27, 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington, Junction City. Wayne went home to be with the Lord from Salina Hospice on October 23. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are encouraged to the Dean & Wayne Berneking Family Endowed Scholarship at Cloud County Community College, the Kay Pogue Hospice Center, Salina, or the Alida-Upland Parish.
A native of Simpson, KS, Wayne dedicated his life in service to others, first in the United States Navy as a Seaman 2nd class from 1951 to 1955. He married Doris "Dean" Berneking April 25, 1953. Wayne farmed in Formoso, KS prior to moving to Geary County in 1966 where he served the people of Kansas by building and managing Milford State Park, an endeavor that fulfilled his love for the outdoors until his retirement in 1993. Wayne served the youth of central Kansas as a referee of high school football and basketball for more than 25 years. Wayne and Dean shared a passion for antiques and travel, highlighted by excursions to Europe, the Middle East, and Hawaii.
In addition to his wife, Wayne is survived by two sons, Martin and wife, Jonnie, of Salina and Brian Dean of Dalian, China. He has two grandsons, Daniel Ethan and Brian Allan of Salina. He is also survived by a brother Wybern of Formoso, KS and a sister Margaret McCallum of Beloit, KS.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.
