Public Memorial Services for Walter E. Gunderson, Jr.,67,of Junction City, Kansas will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14,2002 at the First United Methodist Church, Junction City, KS. A private service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on the same day at the Community of Christ Church in Manhattan, KS. Elder Don Bice will officiate. Walter died December 6, 2002 at Salina Regional Medical Center, Salina, Kansas, no visitation will be held, cremation is planned. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Community of Christ Church, 401 Vattier, Manhattan, Kansas 66502. Walter was born May 18, 1935, at Independence, MO to Walter E. and Dorothy (Etzenhouser) Gunderson, Sr. Walter received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Pittsburg State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Musicology from the University of Iowa. He also pursued doctoral studies in Music History at the University of Northern Colorado. He married Ruth Ann Hidy June 9, 1957 at Stewartsville, MO; she preceded him in death December 1, 2002. He devoted many years to teaching at all educational levels, including an Associate Professor of Music position at Union College, Barbourville, KY, and 17 years in elementary music in Junction City and Fort Riley, Kansas. He was a member of Community of Christ Church member. He served in the offices of Priest, Elder, High Priest, and Evangelist. Survivors: One Son: Gordon Gunderson, of Junction City; One Daughter: Amy Johnson of Topeka, KS; Two Brothers: David Gunderson of Kansas City, MO, and Robert Gunderson of Independence, MO; Three Sisters: Mary Cash of Pittsburg, KS, Margaret Shupe and Carol Goddard both of Loveland, CO; and Two Grandchildren. Preceded In Death By: Parents and wife. Organist will be Dale Rider and Vocalists will be Ken and Melinda Martin.
