Virginia Winifred (Obrecht) Popejoy Smith, 85, formerly of Junction City, KS died on May 13, 2016 at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Junction City, Kansas with Pastor Laurie Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
She was born on February 2, 1931, Mayetta, Kansas to Jacob and Dora (Willey) Obrecht. She moved to Junction City, KS in 1983. Virginia graduated in 1989 from Kansas State University with a Bachelor's in Social Work, she worked for the State of Kansas as a Social Worker from 1990 to 1996.When she married her second husband Lester they owned and operated the Smith/Singer Sewing Machine Sales and Service in Junction City.
Virginia was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She married Earle Popejoy August 27, 1950 and they divorced in 1978, she married Lester R. Smith May 14, 1997 and he preceded her in death January 19, 2008.
Virginia is survived by her three sons, David W. (Debbi) Popejoy of Rockaway Beach, MO, Douglas E. Popejoy of Boca Raton, FL and Dana R. (Tammy) Popejoy of Manhattan, KS; she is also survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Reva McAnarney; three brothers, Floyd E. Obrecht, Stanley R. Obrecht and Clyde O. Obrecht.
