Funeral services for SFC (Ret) Vernon Leroy Ball, 70, Junction City, will be 11 a.m., Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Church Of Our Savior United Methodist Church, 1735 Thompson with Rev. Joyce Allen officiating. Burial will follow with Masonic services at Fort Riley Cemetery. Mr. Ball passed away March 25, 2006 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, KS. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 North Washington. Vernon was born January 27, 1936 in Cambridge, Springs, PA the oldest son of James and Florence(Porter) Ball. He graduated from Cambridge Springs High School in 1954. He worked as a short order cook for the Venango Inn Of Venango, PA and in the summers traveled to FL and worked as a food runner for the Orange Blossom Cafeteria in St. Petersburg, FL, until 1956.
In July 1956 he joined the US Army and made a career of it for 25 1/2 years traveling the world serving in: Germany three tours, Thailand, one tour, Vietnam, one tour, Korea, one tour. Stateside posts were: Ft. Jackson, SC, (twice), Ft. Knox, KY, Ft. McPherson, GA, Ft. Monmouth, NJ and Ft. Riley, KS.
Vernon became a Mason in 1961 and was Master of Union Lodge # 7 , Junction City, KS. He was also in York Rite, Chapter 17, Council #22, and Commandery #43 and was Grand High Priest 2003-2004. Served as Worth Patron of Melita Chapter #116, Order of the Eastern Star. Also a member of the Clown Unit of Isis Shrine Temple of Salina, KS.
In July of 1957 while on leave he and Jean Grove eloped and have been married 49 years. She survives at the home. Other survivors include a son Duane Ball, Midwest City, OK, three daughters Victoria Sayhi, Orlando, FL, Susan Head, Harker Heights, TX, and Janet Bacon, Bloomington, MN and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Organist will be Dick Polgreen. Vocalist will be Elouise Morris.
Pallbearers will be James Benko, Mike Fegan, Donald Kelly, Gary Miles, Ron McKenzie, and Jim Nelson.
