Verna passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Stoneybrook Skilled Nursing facility in
Manhattan, Kansas, at the age of 92 years, after a short illness.
Verna was born April 27, 1914, to Lester and Mary Ann (Oppenlander) Reed in Clay
Center, Kansas. She married to Tommy S. Parry in Clay Center, Kansas on May 17, 1936.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband on January 17, 1972. Survivors include one
brother, Wayne Reed of Clay Center, KS; one daughter, Barbara Parry, Manhattan, KS; a
granddaughter, Penny Hamilton and her husband, Ron, Council Grove, KS; a grandson,
Jason Miller and his wife, Torrey, Chatham, Illinois; great grand-daughters, Tasha
Hamilton, Tamaya Hamilton-,' Council Grove, Ks; Kyrsten Miller, Chatham, Illinois; and
great grandsons, Cody Miller, Cameron Miller, Wichita Falls, Texas; and Conner Miller,
Chatham, Illinois; as well as nieces and a nephew.
Verna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and a
good friend to all who knew her. She lived and worked in various cities and towns in
Kansas, Nebraska and California. While living in Marysville she helped with the family
business as bookkeeper and support mate. Verna was always ready to help out family
and friends when needed wherever she lived. While in Topeka, she worked for the
Barker Shoe Store and Montgomery Ward, while in California she worked for 5 years
with Sears. After her retirement in 1981, Verna lived briefly in Council Grove, Ks,
before moving to Manhattan in December of 1985 to be close to her daughter.
Verna enjoyed meeting people, doing various crafts, reading, traveling and volunteer
work, which she continued to do when called upon up until a short time before her final
illness. Because of failing eyesight in later years, Verna subscribed to the Talking Books
program through the Manhattan Public Library so she could continue to enjoy reading.
Verna was a past member of Eastern Star while living in Marysville; the Topeka Business
Women's organization; and was a member of the Manhattan Eagles for several years,
Verna also leaves behind other extended family and many friends who will celebrate her
life, miss her greatly, but remember her with love and appreciation. Her legacy of love
and passion for life will live after her through all the lives she has touched.
Cremation is planned with a celebration of life memorial service to be held at 1:00 p.m.,
Thursday, July 6th, at the College Avenue Methodist Church in Manhattan. In lieu of
flowers the family requests that a memorial donation be made to the Manhattan
Home Care and Hospice, or your favorite local charity. Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel Junction City assisted the family with cremation arrangements.
