Verna Marie Fortner, 78 of Junction City, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021 at her daughters home in Stoutsville, Missouri.
She was born February 24, 1942 in Damar, Kansas the daughter of Dolphas L. and Clara E. LaBarge Senesac.
Verna was born and raised in Damar, Kansas and was a graduate of Damar High School. She married George William Fortner on April 12, 1969 and he preceded her in death February 25, 2008. They made their home in Junction City, Kansas where they raised their family. In 2019 Verna moved to Stoutsville, Missouri to live with her daughter due to health concerns. She was a member of the Saint Xavier Catholic Church, Junction City, Kansas, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. Verna was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Junction City. She loved to play volleyball and played until she was 55 years old. She also was an avid Kansas Jayhawk fan and a Kansas City Chiefs football fan. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed going fishing. Most of all she enjoyed being around her family especially her grandchildren who she loved very much.
She is survived by five daughters, Becky Buckman (Dan) of Stoutsville, Missouri, Tammy Humbard (Mike King) of Waldorf, Maryland, Paula Miller (Wava) of Junction City, Kansas, Trina Fortner of Junction City, Kansas and Antoniette "Dee Dee" (Mike) Goodman of Overland Park, Kansas. Two sons Larry Fortner (Tara) of Monroe City and Eric Fortner (Cheryl) of Maryland. Four sisters Greta Graf of Damar, Kansas, Wilma Hollerich of Tipton, Kansas, Norma Brungardt of Ellis, Kansas and Kathy Freuenkron of Wichita, Kansas. 22 grandchildren Sheena Williams, Stevie Lee, Shane Powell, Shawn Powell Whitney Bichsel, Stephanie McNabb, Ashley Dean, Chance Humbard, Mercedes Fortner, Lauren Fortner, Riley Fortner, Corey Alvarez, Chad Alvarez, Cody Alvarez, Audrey Fortner. Lawson Langford, Kailey Woody, EJ Fortner Esme Fortner, Nova Fortner, Ella Goodman and Madison Goodman. 20 great grandchildren, Raina, Tristan, Emma, Samuel, Carson, Lana, Jovey, Brody, Kaiden, Bryce, Talan, Benson, Ean, Ryann, Olivia, Noah, Christopher, Cheyenne, Brinley and baby girl Alvarez in the near future. One daughter in law Stacie Nachtman. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Mike Nachtman, four brothers Carl, Lester, Eldo, and Ronnie Senesac, two sisters Doris and Phylis Senesac.
There will be a Rosary Service held in Monroe City on 7:00 pm Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the Garner Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the Saint Xavier Catholic Church, Junction City, Kansas. Graveside services will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Junction City, Kansas. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home, 203 North Washington Street, Junction City, Kansas 66441. Active pallbearers will be Shane Powell, Shawn Powell, Camden Uplinger, Cory Putman, Aron Lee, Scotty Williams, Jared Bichsel. Honorary pallbearers will be Chance Humbard, Chad Alvarez. Cory Alvarez, Cody Alvarez, Lawson Langford and E.J. Fortner.
