Funeral services for Tina (Valentina) Powers, 83, of Junction City will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the Faith Lutheran ELCA Church with Pastor Stephen Haverlah officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Riley Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, August 24, 2009, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue, Junction City, KS. Mrs. Powers passed away at her home on August 20, 2009. Memorial contributions have been designated to Homecare & Hospice, c/o Geary Community Healthcare Foundation, P.O. Mrs. Powers was born on August 22, 1925, Parnu, Estonia to Edward and Alma (Roos) Paide. After escaping from the Russians, and surviving the sinking of a ship, Mrs. Powers became a nurse's aide for the International Red Cross in Germany. She was a hat model in Vienna, Austria following WWII prior to marrying 1SG Walter C."Shorty" Powers, Sr. on August 20, 1947 in Saltzburg, Austria.
Mrs. Powers was a seamstress and a homemaker while raising her children. She was very proud of becoming a naturalized citizen in 1952. She had so much love for her entire family and her many dogs. She loved to garden.
She was fluent in four different languages. Her love of travel took her to France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Finland, Hawaii, Canada and the Netherlands and many other countries throughout her life. She was a devoted member of the Faith Lutheran ELCA Church.
She is survived by her six children, William "Bill" Powers and his wife Carol of Junction City, KS, Linda Powers of the home, Cheryl (Lacer) Brown and her husband Hank of Lenexa, KS, Walter C. Powers, Jr. and his wife Donna, John Powers and his wife Christine all of Junction City and Jack R. Powers and his wife Veronica of Oak Harbor, WA, twelve grandchildren; Rachel Keck, Sarah Jordan, Luke Leek, Amy Roberts, Collin Powers, Scott Powers, Hayley Powers, Jonathan Powers, Jordan Powers, Jessica Powers, Jared Powers and Sean Powers and four great-grandchildren; Lily Jordan, Dax Robinett, Dionna Roberts and Leo Keck. Tina is also survived by her sister Maimu of Parnu, Estonia, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins of Estonia and Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister, her husband, Walter C. "Shorty" Powers on October 3, 1983.
