Theodore "Ted" Laven was born January 11, 1934, in Osakis, Minnesota. He was the son of Arthur and Carrie (Swore) Laven. After graduating from Osakis High School, Ted attended the University of Minnesota where he joined the ROTC program and graduated from the College of Pharmacy with the Class of 1956. He was a member of the Phi Delta Chi Fraternity. After graduation he completed his commitment with the US Army by serving two years active duty where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. His first duty station was overseas in Iceland. Afterward, he was stationed at Irwin Army Community Hospital in Fort Riley, Kansas. There First Lieutenant Laven met the love of his life and best friend, Shirley Webster.

On July 7, 1961, he married Shirley at the First Christian Church in Junction City. They lived in Emporia, Kansas for many years where Ted worked as a registered pharmacist. After retirement, the couple moved to Shirley's childhood home near Junction City.

Ted was a lifelong member of the Osakis Lutheran Church in Minnesota and attended the First Christian Church in Junction City. He had a passion for gardening and was an active member of the Gardeners of America. Ted and Shirley's flower gardens in both Emporia and Junction City have been admired and enjoyed by many over the years. Together they traveled the country attending various flower club conventions. Ted was a member of the American Iris Society, the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society, Geary County Historical Society, and Douglas County Historical Society. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and was always researching new things. He was a gadget guy and an early adopter of new technology. Ted enjoyed honing his carpenter skills in his workshop. He was a sweet, kindhearted man with an easy and generous laugh.

Survivors include his devoted wife Shirley of 55 years and 10 nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and Shirley's parents, W.G. and Goldie Webster, he was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, Harold and Roberta, Ralph and Bette; and a sister Janet Laven.
