Memorial services for Telfer A. "Dick" Pollard, 86, of Junction City will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2011 with Reverend Carol Ramey officiating at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Inurnment will follow at Lyona Cemetery. No visitation is planned. Mr. Pollard passed away at Valley View Senior Life Center on October 21, 2011. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions have been designated to Friends of Animals, P.O. Box 580, Junction City, KS 66441.
Dick was born January 18, 1925, Neligh, NE to Telfer R. and Ida Blanche (Adams) Pollard. He lived his early years in Meadow Grove, NE, he was drafted into the U.S. Army August of 1944, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan. He was honorably discharged September 24, 1946.
Following his time in the U.S. Army, he came to Junction City with his wife Janice and children in the early 50's where he was a painter at Fort Riley and later he started his own contracting business. Dick also owned and operated the Tropics Bar. He and Janice divorced and he later married Ann Spratlin.
Dick started racing at Plaza Speedway on J-Hill, he later moved it to Hwy-57 where he owned and operated the raceway. In the early 70's he and Ann bought Sam & Jack's Army Store and renamed it the Clothes Barrel. He also loved horses and raced all over the country.
He is survived by his wife Ann of Junction City, son, Telfer C. Pollard of Tracy, CA, daughters, Pamala J. Nagel-Pollard and Lynn Small and husband Bob, step-son, Pete Spratlin and wife Candy all of Junction City, eight grandchildren, Annette Pollard, Christina Sitton, Telfer J. Pollard, Curtis Pollard, Leah D. Nagel, Natalie L. Nagel, Sam Spratlin and Kelsey Spratlin, four great-grandchildren, Star, Makayla, Gabby and Chyla, two sisters, Miriam Mecham of Billings, Montana and Opal Halsey of Chapman, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Clair Pollard, Dolores "Dee" Leapley, Marion "Doc" Pollard, Merrill Pollard, Raymond Pollard and Leola Pollard.
