A Mass of Christian Burial for Ted C. Irwin, 61, of Milford, KS will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt officiating, burial will follow at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, 6-8 p.m. with vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington, Junction City, KS. Mr. Irwin passed away at his residence on June 22, 2009.
He was born Feb. 23, 1948, in Santa Monica, CA, the son of Quintin M. Irwin and Gertrude H. Schenk. He graduated from high school in Woodland Hills, CA.
Ted entered the U.S. Army following high school in 1967. He held various positions in the Army that included Air Traffic Control Operator and Air Traffic Control Radar Operator. He earned many medals and awards while in the Army which include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), Purple Heart w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon "1". In 1985 Ted ended his time with the Army and immediately started working for the Federal Civil Service.
He worked on Fort Riley as a Chief with the Reserve Component Support Division. Ted retired on January 31, 2009, after 24 years of dedicated service.
Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Vilander of Topeka, KS and Denise Irwin of Fort Riley; a sister Carol Baker of Reno, NV. Ted also leaves four grandchildren.
