Funeral services for Sybil Lois Cowan, 92, of Junction City, Kansas will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at the First Christian Church with Pastor Ronnie Roberts officiating. Burial will take place at Fort Riley Cemetery at a later date. No visitation is planned. Mrs. Cowan passed away at Lexington Park Nursing Home, Topeka, Kansas on June 23, 2011. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the First Christian Church, 1429 St. Mary's Road, Junction City, Kansas 66441.
Mrs. Cowan was born December 28, 1918, on a farm in the foothills of the Ozarks, Dale, Arkansas, to John and Argie (Adkins) Gimlin. She received her Bachelors of Science at Kansas State University in 1953 and her Masters Degree from Emporia State in 1955. She worked for Geary County USD 475 for over 30 years teaching elementary school and reading at Fort Riley Junior High for her last 24 years. She retired in 1984. She was a member of the First Christian Church and a former deaconess of the church, past president of Circle II, a member of the retired Teacher's Association and a past member of Delta Kappa
Gamma. She was an avid antique collector and loved her garden. She married Joe O. Cowan December 26, 1942; he preceded her in death on February 8, 1988.
A beloved mother, she is survived by three daughters; Joanne Ax of Arlington, Virginia, Janet Lawson of Roswell, Georgia, and Janelle Carson (Jim) of Topeka, Kansas, one brother, Hoyt Gimlin (Joan) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, three grandchildren, Elissa Lawson (Kirk), Eric Lawson (Lori), George Ax (Cathleen), seven great-grandchildren, Nolan Schaper, Aidan Schaper, Morgan Lawson, Madison Lawson, Geoffrey Ax, Louise Ax and Hannah Ax. She will be missed.
