Stephen J. Herrmann, 60, of Herington, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita. He was born August 28, 1943, at Sabetha, the son of Alvin H. and Mary M. (Hoffman) Herrmann.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 18, 2003, at the St. John Catholic Church, Herington with Rev. Mark Wesely officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 PM, Saturday in the Sabetha Cemetery, Sabetha, Kansas, with Rev. Tom Dunavan officiating. Friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory, Herington Chapel, from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday, October 17, at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel.
Mr. Herrmann was a social science teacher and football & track coach. He taught at the Herington High School (USD 487)from 1969 until he retired in May 2000. He was the head football coach and track coach. Prior to coming to Herington he taught at Delphos, Kansas, in the Minneapolis school district from 1966 until 1969. Graduated from Sabetha High School with the class of 1961, received his Bachelors Degree in Education from Kansas State Teachers College in 1966, and his Masters of Science Degree in Physical Education from Kansas State Teachers College in 1970.
Mr. Herrmann was a member of the Herington Country Club, the Kansas Coach's Association, the Kansas Chapter of the National Education Assn., and the National Education Assn. He was a past member of the Herington Jaycees Chapter and a past member of the Herington Lions Club. Served on the Herington Recreation Commission for many years.
Married Patricia L. Reid on August 25, 1962, in Sabetha, she survives of the home. Survived by two sons; Scott Herrmann (wife-Diane), of Silver Lake, Kansas, and Craig Herrmann (wife-Kiffany) of Wichita, Kansas, and his mother Mary Herrmann of Sabetha. Survived by five grandchildren; Tyler, Heather, Mark, Claire, and Nichole.
Preceded in death by his father Alvin Herrmann.
A scholarship fund is being setup in Stephen Herrmann's memory with the Herington High School, and could be sent to the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, Kansas, 67449-3038.
