SSG (RET.) Walter Joseph Givens Sr., 79, of Junction City, passed away on July 16, 2023, at Stormont-Vail Healthcare surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will take place at The New Church of The Living God, Monday, 7/24/2023, 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery 1:00 p.m. with full military honors.
Walter was born on February 20, 1944, to John and Cora (Jackson) Givens in New York, New York. After graduating from Commerce High School in 1961, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served two tours in Vietnam and continued his honorable service for 22 years. After retirement from the U.S. Army, Walter continue serving his community in Civil Service as Range Control on Fort Riley. After another 20 years in Civil Service, he finally made the choice to retire completely.
Continuing to support his beloved community, he found the best way to do so was through his church. Both Walter and his loving wife earned their Deaconship through The New Church of The Living God. He volunteered and participated in every program the church had to offer, whether that be through choir, house-keeping, being a part of the church's 3G's Ministry, or Men of Valor. His love for singing was expressed through the years with his praise quartet called The Chosen Four.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; one son, Walter (Monica) Givens Jr.; three daughters, Antonia (Bryan) Day, Michele (Curtis) Castillo, and Tara (Michael) Hammond; one brother, David Givens and nine grandchildren, Chelsea and Cameron Day, Jared and Philip Givens, Mikaela, Joshua, Michael Jr., Natalie, and Nathaniel Hammond.
He is preceded by his parents; four sisters, Maureen Jackson, Mildred L. Murray, Celestine Givens, Dorothy Jones and three brothers, John S. Givens III, John A. Givens IV, and Roland Jackson.
