SSG Marvin Edward Schoenrock (RET), 83, of Junction City, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014 at Geary Community Hospital.
Marvin was born on January 20, 1931 in Beardsley, Minnesota to Harold and Laura Schoenrock. He was the oldest of 10 children and left home at age 17 to enlist in the U S Army. Marvin was most proud of his military service. His 24 year military career included tours in Germany, Austria, Korea and two tours in Vietnam. While serving in Germany, he met the love of his life, Anne Schoendorfer. They married on September 1, 1955 in Salzburg, Austria and came to Junction City from Anchorage, Alaska in March of 1960.
During his service he received a Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts and an Army Commendation Medal. Marvin exemplified the concept of a "band of brothers" to the fullest. He never spoke of another veteran with anything but respect and kinship. After retiring in 1971 he worked for civil service in the commissary and then was self employed until 1995.
Marvin, or "Rock" as he was known by many of his friends, touched many lives through his 83 years. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandsons who fondly called him "Papa Rock". He most wanted to be remembered for having fun.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Anne, son Chris, his parents and several siblings. He is survived by son Gery and wife Patti, son Marvin Jr and wife Shanna, grandson Anderson and wife Lisa, grandson Kendall and wife Meghan, and great granddaughter Elizabeth Anne Schoenrock.
Marvin faced many challenges throughout his 83 years. He always drew strength from the skills he honed while in the military. In recent years most of these challenges were based on health issues that most any other person would have retreated from but Marvin's style was to face his challenges head on. After several bouts with pneumonia in recent months, he passed away peacefully with family at his side. He would be most proud that he died on Memorial Day!
Marvin was buried with full military honors at Fort Riley Cemetery on May 29, 2014. Arrangements were handled by Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation for the Schoenrock Speech Therapy and Laryngectomy Fund – P.O. Box 3015, Junction City, KS 66441
