Services for SSG Mark Daniel Vasquez, 35, of Fort Riley, will be Wednesday, November 19, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at Kapaun Chapel, Fort Riley. Services will be followed by cremation.

SSG Vasquez was born April 19, 1968, Port Huron, MI to Guadalupe and Pamela (Whooley) Vasquez. On April 20, 1993 he enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman. After completing his initial training at the Infantry School in Fort Benning, GA, he was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry in Schofield, HI. In 1996, he was reassigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served in 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry. SSG Vasquez then served in the Republic of Korea with 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry at both Camp Liberty Bell and Camp Greaves, both of which are on the Demilitarized Zone. After his overseas tour, he returned to the United States, serving at Fort Campbell, KY in 3rd Battalion, 16th Infantry as an Infantry Squad Leader. While assigned to Fort Riley in 2003, he earned the Ranger Tab after successfully completing US Army Ranger School. In early September 2003, he was deployed to Iraq with 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. SSG Vasquez gave his last full measure and was killed in action while leading his squad on patrol on November 8, 2003.

SSG Vasquez's awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), NCO Professional Development ribbon (2nd Award), Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award). He also earned the coveted Expert Infantryman's Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Army Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge.

He married Nicole Barnes, May 16, 1994 in Hawaii

He is survived by his wife, Nicole, his daughter, Breanna, his son, Camren, and his father, Guadalupe.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

A memorial fund has been established for SSG Vasquez's family at Fort Riley National Bank, Fort Riley Branch.
