Shirley Gillen

Shirley Gillen, 81, of Junction City, died Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at KU Medical Center. Shirley was born October 26, 1938, Junction City, the daughter of Harlin and Lillian (Ritter) Bragg.

Shirley attended Junction City schools and was a graduate of Junction City High School class of 1956.

She married her husband Jerry Gillen on April 20, 1958. They were married 57 years. Jerry died October 24, 2015. Jerry was called to serving the army shortly after they were married which placed them in Fort Hood, Texas and Augsburg, Germany 1958-1960, and then they returned to Junction City.

Shirley attended Brown Mackie Technical College of Salina, graduating with a degree in accounting. Shirley and Jerry owned and operated Gillen's Shoe Store and Cowen's Shoe Store in downtown Junction City. Shirley was then a branch manager for First National Bank, customer Service Manager of independent housing at Fort Riley, and worked tax season for H & R Block. She was the Geary County Chairman for the Eastern Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis for 25 years. Shirley's interests over the years were plants and flowers, boating, traveling adventures, and working crossword puzzles. She continued working these puzzles digitally with friends and family, and researching a diversity of interests online. Shirley's door was always open, she was most grateful for the many gracious home care and medical services, friends and family members that she visited with near and far.

Shirley was proceeded in death by her husband, Jerry; her parents Harlin and Lillian Bragg.

Survivors include: son, Tom Gillen and his wife Freda of Chapman; daughter, Kay Bauman and her husband Kevin of Eudora; daughter Kim Osborn of Wichita; grandchildren - Tara (Jason) Altenhoften, Robin (Chad) Wilfawn, Jerrad (Rebecca) Gillen, Austin (Jessica) Murphy, Ashley (Brian) Smardo, Nicole (Chris) Brady, Jaimie Osborn; and 10 great grandchildren, she is also survived by her sister Betty McCullough of Florida.


Visitation will be Thursday, January 16, 5:00-7:00 pm at Johnson Funeral Home.

A private burial will be at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley, Manhattan, Kansas where her ashes will be laid to rest next to her loving husband at a later date.
