Sherril Mondzak Proctor, 78, of Grandview Plaza, KS, passed peacefully at her home on May 3, 2017. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home is assisting family with arrangements.
Sherril was born on June 1, 1938, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Jim and Vera (Anderson) Beavers. She spent her early years with her family in Omaha, Nebraska; Sioux City, Iowa; and Devils Lake, North Dakota. She moved to Junction City, Kansas, with her parents and siblings in 1952. Sherril met Joseph (Joe) Mondzak at Fort Riley, Kansas. They married there in 1958. In 1966, Joe went to serve his country in Viet Nam. Sherril and the children went to live in Junction City, Kansas, during that time. The family later settled down and made their long-term home in northern California in 1968. For the 22 years of Joe's military service, she, Joe, and their children lived and traveled to numerous locations including Orleans, France; Nuremberg, Schwabisch Gmund, and Frankfurt, Germany; and several other United States Army bases.
As the wife of a service member, Sherril hosted social functions, enjoyed playing bridge with wives of other service members, and taught Jitterbug dancing. She was proud of being a military spouse, homemaker, and mother. Sherril loved her family dearly and delighted in spending time with her granddaughter, Audrey, and great-grandchildren, Carson and Carlie.
Her other interests included swimming, her beloved pets, reading, gardening, writing, and creative cooking. Sherril was a very good cook. She had an abundance of exposure to many cultures during her life as a military spouse. She incorporated many meals from these cultures into her daily life and many special occasions. She introduced the diverse foods in many family gatherings. The popular question during these occasions was "What's Sherril trying on us now".
Sherril was a hard worker. She worked retail for many years, owned a Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio, gift and consignment shops, and a local catering company. Upon retirement, she worked part time at Hallmark Cards in Junction City, Kansas, and volunteered at Grandview Plaza Elementary School.
She will be missed.
