SGM (Ret) McKinley Smith, 79, of Junction City, KS, died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Geary Community Hospital. Visitation will be held 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday, February 10, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Funeral Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, February 11, 2013, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Douglas Brown officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery in Manhattan, KS. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions have been designated to the Pancreatic Cancer Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714.
McKinley was born November 11, 1933, Chesapeake, VA to McKinley and Sallie (Moore) Smith, Sr. He joined the Army and served in Vietnam, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm (Unit), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Presidential Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (10th Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon "3", NCO Professional Development Ribbon "1", the Meritorious Service Medal and the Expert (M-16 Rifle).
When he retired from the Army he worked in the circulation department at the Daily Union and for the past few years worked at Celebrity Limousine.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #8773 and had served as the Post Commander locally and also as State Post Commander.
He married Susie (Hall) March 9, 1959, Washington D.C.
He is survived by his wife Susie of Junction City, KS, three sons; Eric Smith (Gabby) of Killeen, TX, Elton Smith (Regan) of Canada and Emory Smith (Robin) of Colorado Springs, CO, seven grandchildren and one brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
