A memorial mass for SFC (Ret) Robert J. Herron, 81, Junction City will take place 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 16, at St. Xavier Catholic Church. Concelebrants will be Father Al Brungardt and Father Frank Coady. Inurnment will follow the service at Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors. A visitation will take place 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday, January 13, at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel with a vigil service taking place at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Herron passed away Thursday, January 10, at the Valley View Retirement Community in Junction City. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Xavier Catholic Church P.O. Box 399 Junction City, KS. 66441 or to the Hospice and Home Health Care at Geary Community Hospital c/o Geary Community Health Care Foundation P.O. Box 3015 Junction City, Kansas 66441.
Mr. Herron was born May 17, 1926, Finchburg, AL to Robert J. and Delvina (Page) Herron. He served in the U S Army retiring in 1972. He married Patricia A. (Barksdale) March 5, 1949 at Fort Riley, KS, she survives of the home. Following his retirement from the Army he worked as the head custodian for Junction City High School for 17 years until his retirement He was an avid golfer, a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree and a lifetime and chartered member of VFW Post 8773.
He is also survived by three sons; Frederick J. Herron of Savage, MN, Patrick E. Herron of Junction City, KS and Bradley R. Herron of Kansas City, KS, four daughters; Cynthia A. Herron of Overland Park, KS, Greta M. Herron, Natalie E. Herron and Vanessa (Herron) Gordon all of New York City, one brother; Adolph Herron of Mobile, AL, three sisters, Clarissa Richardson of Mobile, AL, Janie Thanes of Los Angeles, CA and Patricia Pickney of Gardenia, CA and five grandchildren; James Herron of Eudora, KS, Dana Herron of St. Paul, MN, Foye Gordon and James Gordon both of New York City and Chandler Herron of Kansas City, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters and one son; Robert J. Herron in 1949.
