SFC (RET) James Edward Taylor, 71, of Junction City, Kansas, passed January 10, 2021. He was born on April 7, 1949, in Shaw, Mississippi, the son of the late Oscar and Mary (Burtin) Taylor.
James was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 21. With his service he was involved in the Vietnam War, Dessert Storm, was stationed in Germany, Korea, and retired at Fort Riley Kansas with The Big Red One. He served honorably for over 22 years. He also earned many decorations and awards which include but are not limited to: the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal w/ Bronze Star, Army Lapel Button, NCO Professional Development Ribbon "2", Kuwait Liberation Medal, Sharpshooter (M-16 Rifle), Overseas Service Ribbon "3", Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Army Achievement Medal w/ 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/ 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/ 3rd BSS, and the Meritorious Service Medal w/ 1st Oak Leaf Cluster.
After his retirement from the United States Army, James went to work as a as a machine operator with Quaker Oats and had a second retirement in 2012. While he was employed, he perused higher education in Concordia, Kansas, earning an Associates in Graphic Design in the early 2000's.
James was a member of the American Legion of Junction City. He enjoyed many things in his spare time. He served as a Volunteer Election Board Worker for the Geary County Election Polls and served as a volunteer for the USD 475 Fundraiser program.
James loved sports, fishing, and cooking and barbequing for his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Ann Taylor whom he married January 7 of 1989.
James is also survived by: his three children, Sherron Kimberly Taylor, James Edward Taylor II, and Ianthia Taylor; two grandchildren, Khai'Airi Lee Twiggs and Jourdan A. Ratcliff; two great-grandchildren, David II and Drew Ratcliff; and a host of loving family and friends, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Mattie Bell and Bobbie Bryson.
James was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather and great-grandfather, and loyal friend.
He will be missed by all that loved and knew him.
Due to the current Covid-19 environment, a memorial service will be held by family January 29, 2021 at the Johnson Funeral Home 203 North Washington Street of Junction City at 10:00am.
