Samuel C. Batsell

Samuel C. Batsell, 78 of Junction City passed away at his residence on October 9, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, October 19, 2007 at The Highland Baptist Church with Pastor Brad Seifert and Larry Kelley officiating. Cremation has taken place and a private inurnment will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Geary County Senior Citizen Center, 1025 S. Spring Valley Rd., Junction City, KS 66441 and/or Highland Baptist Church, 1407 St. Mary's Rd., Junction City, KS 66441. Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel assisted the family with cremation arrangements.

Mr. Batsell was born July 4, 1929 on a farm at Holden, MO to Samuel C. and Rita (Christiansen) Batsell. Upon the death of his father in March of 1941 his mother took him and his younger sister to Bay City, MI. In January of 1941 he came to Junction City to be raised by his Aunt and Uncle Alice and Blair Adam. Sam attended school in Junction City in what is now known as the Geary County Museum at 530 N. Adams and graduated at the Junior-Senior High school in the class of 1947.

He attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence for one year and then worked during the summer at the Iowa Ordinance plant west of Burlington, IA. He enlisted in the Navy on July 23, 1948, in Des Moines, IA, serving until July 11, 1952. He married Marie J. Wieger, a member of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), on April 25, 1952 in Trenton, N.J.

Employment started as a draftsman at the Deerfield, IL, North of Chicago location in August 1952 this was an Allis Chalmers Wheel loader manufacturing plant in Deerfield, IL. Sam remained with the company as it later became FiatAllis and then transferred to work at their Springfield, IL manufacturing plant eventually retiring with 31 years of service as a Project Engineer I. For the next four years Sam was with McCellan Engineering at Springfield, IL. After his retirement Sam returned home to Junction City in 1987.

Sam spent the next four years employed as manager of the JC Self Storage facility and then later worked as a part time employee for his cousin Phil Willhoite at the local John Deere distributorship.

He is survived by three sons; Samuel Curtis Batsell, an Attorney of Arlington, VA, Dr. Stephen G. Batsell of Oak Ridge, TN and David B. Batsell of Junction City, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marie, she preceded him in death on May 30, 1993.
