Ruth Sophia Marie Baresel Gfeller, 102, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Chapman Valley Manor. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2021 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy McCall and Pastor Erik Graefe co-officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. John's Cemetery at the corner of Dietrich and St. John's Road. Mrs. Gfeller will lie in state 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2021 at the Johnson Funeral Home. The family will not be present. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church 630 S. Eisenhower Dr. Junction City, KS 66441; Zion United Church of Christ 1811 McFarland Road Junction City, KS 66441 or to Chapman Valley Manor P.O. Box 219 Chapman, KS 67431. Masks are required to be worn at the funeral.
Ruth was born June 30, 1919, the daughter of Edward and Victoria (Kramer) Baresel. As a youngster, she attended Wetzel and Berry one room schools. Ruth graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1937. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Clarks Creek. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City.
In 1938, Ruth began working for Christenson and Beeler Grain Elevator in Junction City. When the business was purchased by Morrison Grain Company, Ruth became the manager, a position she held for fifty years. During this era, she was the only woman in Junction City managing a large business.
On June 24, 1947, Ruth married William (Bill) Gfeller at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City. When they married, Bill had just returned from serving combat duty in the Army. Bill and Ruth lived in his childhood home west of Junction City where he took over the family farm. They were world travelers having visited most of the continents. After Bill's death, Ruth continued traveling with her sisters.
She is survived by her sister, Irma Baresel Sjo of Manhattan and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband William; three sisters, Bernice Baresel Munson, Mae Baresel Ascher and Marie Baresel Jorns.
