Russell M. Gaston, Jr., 80, of Junction City died June 25, 2018 at Valley View Senior Life Center. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Maguffee officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Private family burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been designated to the First Presbyterian Church, 113 W. 5th Street, Junction City, KS 66441 and/or the Russell M. Gaston, Jr. Scholarship Fund in c/o the Geary Community Schools Foundation, 900 N. Eisenhower Drive, Junction City, KS 66441.
Russell was born May 23, 1938 in Junction City, KS to Russell M. Sr. and Opal (Sutter) Gaston. He attended Geary County Schools and graduated in 1956. He attended Kansas State University on a full athletic scholarship in football.
Russell worked at Allen's Market in Junction City for several years and later became manager. He was a salesman at Morganfield-McKenna Pontiac, Inc. He was awarded President of the Pontiac Motor Division's Master Salesmen's Guild, Gold Chapter, because he was one of the highest ranking salesmen in the Kansas City zone during 1969. He was in the top 15% of salesmen in the nation. He went on to become a sales consultant at Jim Clark Auto Center.
In 1985, Russell became manager/owner of the Shield of Shelter Insurance Agency. He established the Junction City High School Shield of Shelter Scholarship in order to provide financial assistance to deserving graduating seniors. He retired in 2008 to spend more time golfing and fishing.
Russell was active in the Junction City community. He was involved in the Junction City Jaycees, JC Breakfast Optimist Club, of which his father was a charter member, JC Elks Lodge #1037, and the First Presbyterian Church in which he was a Deacon and an Elder. He was also a coach for the youth baseball club.
Russell spent much of his free time playing cards with his Social Duplicate Bridge Club on Monday nights and his Men's Bridge club on Thursday afternoons. He also enjoyed golfing at Rolling Meadows Golf Course with his family and friends. Many hours were also spent planting and harvesting produce from his garden in which he shared with his friends.
Russell married Carolyn L. Mann February 21, 1970, Junction City, KS at the First Presbyterian Church, Carolyn survives of the home.
He is also survived by four sons, Kevin Gaston of OR, Brian Gaston of Ottawa, KS, Robert (Mary Jane) Witt of Junction City, KS and Brad (Kari) Witt of Papillion, NE; one daughter, Lori Robertson of Junction City, OR and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronald "George" Gaston and Robert "Bob" Gaston.
