Deacon Roosevelt Pierce Richardson, 99, of Junction City, passed away on October 16, 2004 at his residence. Services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 22, 2004 at the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Manhattan, KS. with a viewing from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Pastor George DeBose will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 21, 2004 at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to American Parkinson's Disease, KU Medical Center, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160 and/or Homecare and Hospice, 323 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.
He was born July 19, 1905 in Dallas County, AL, the son of Dank and Charlotte Wade Richardson.
He received Christ as a young man and later moved to Mobile, AL., where he was a member of Aimwell Baptist Church. He worked for McGowan and Lyon's Shipping Co. until his retirement. Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Cleveland, OH where he was a member of St. Timothy Missionary Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Mesopotamia, OH. After moving to his wife's home in Mississippi to care for her in her final days he then moved to Kansas in 1992 to live with his grandchildren. After moving to Kansas he became a member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Manhattan. He was married to Lillie Evans in 1941 in Alabama and she preceded him in death in 1989.
He is survived by his son Calvin Richardson of Cleveland, OH.; niece Clara Latner of Cleveland, OH, whom he raised as his daughter; nieces Mable Norman of Birmingham, AL and Eliza Daniels of New York; seven grandchildren, Patricia, William and Cassandra Brown all of Junction City, Debra Stewart of Mobile, AL, Janie Ledger of Cleveland, OH, Sonja Richardson of Talladega, AL and Tawanda Richardson of Americus, GA., sixteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings Frank Cleveland and Clara Wade.
Pallbearers will be Danny Thompson, Antonio Johnson, Ronald Classberry, Samuel Shephard and Brian Johnson.
Organist will be Mrs. Linnetta Hill and vocalist will be Debra Stewart.
