Funeral services for SFC (Ret) Robert "Bob" L. Allen, 81, Junction City will be 1 p.m., Friday, August 11, 2006 at Church Of Our Saviour United Methodist Church, 1735 Thompson Drive, Junction City, KS with Rev. Joyce Allen officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Riley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, August 10, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline. Robert was born September 19, 1924 in Richmond, VA the son of William and Georgia (Harris) Allen. He entered the US army in 1943 in Richmond, VA and retired in 1968 at the rank of E-7, serving in World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. Robert spent 20 years in Civil Service at Fort Riley as supervisor of Logistics retiring in 1989. Robert was a life-time member of the VFW, Retired Enlisted Association, American Legion and the DAV. Robert was also a member of the Junction City South Kiwanis Club, United Way, Pacesetters - Special Olympics and the German American Club. Robert was a Junction City resident whose volunteer endeavors and charity work have included coaching Special Olympics for over thirty years; receiving the Kansas Special Olympics Outstanding Coach of the year in 1995. Robert also volunteered with the American Red Cross Office at the Irwin Army Hospital for close to twenty years. Robert was the recipient of the "Quiet Hero" award presented to him by the Junction City Mayor and Chamber of Commerce in 1996. Most recently, Robert received the George Hixon Award presented by the Junction City South Kiwanis Club. Robert also received the Betsy Ross award from the American Red Cross.
Robert was married to Liselotte A. Schwab in 1954 in Giessin, Germany, she preceded him in death, July 28, 1999. He is survived by daughters Monika Blei and her husband Klaus of Giessen, Germany and Helga M. Robbins and her husband Adam of Junction City. He is also survived by a Grandson Guy Cognet of Kansas City, Missouri and a sister Elsie Green of Richmond, Virginia and a dear friend Thelma Thompson of Junction City.
