Robert P. "Bob" Hoover, 65, Junction City, KS, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS.

Bob was born December 13, 1946 in Abilene, Kansas to Herbert Paul and Jean Irene (Sherraden) Hoover.

He graduated from Chapman High School class of 1964. He attended Emporia Teachers' College and later the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He started his funeral service career in 1968 at the Danner Funeral Home in Abilene. He later moved to Topeka where he worked for the Parker-Price Mortuary.

He left the funeral service industry to pursue a career as an EMT. He worked for the Cross Ambulance Service, Stormont-Vail Ambulance Service and the Hospital Ambulance Service where he was the assistant director. He returned to the funeral service industry working for Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. He later became an over the road salesman working for Clark Vault Company, Artco Casket Company and the Funeral Director's Life Insurance Company.

He returned to Penwell-Gabel working as a funeral director and embalmer retiring in 2010 in Junction City.

Bob was a member of the National Funeral Director's Association and the Kansas Funeral Director's Association; First Christian Church; American Legion Post #45; Elks Lodge #1037 and was a member of the Junction City Noon Kiwanis and served as president in 2009.


One of his greatest accomplishments was his involvement with the Disaster Mortuary Operations Team where he was a member of the DMORT 7 Team. During this time, Bob assisted with the flood of 1993 when it washed away a cemetery near Harden, Missouri; the 1997 Korean Airlines 747 plane crash in Guam, the World Trade Center September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and with the 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster.


Bob was an avid KSU fan and enjoyed driving his dune buggy. At one time, he played softball for the Penwell-Gabel Softball Team in Topeka. Over the years, he was affectionately named "Boomer" by his friends.

Survivors include his mother Jean Hoover of Abilene, daughter, Tracci Hoover of Topeka, KS and son Darren of Ottawa, KS and one sister, Linda Jones and her husband Elvin of rural Abilene. He is survived by three grandchildren; Darcci Motto, John Motto, Jr. and Anna Motto and one great-granddaughter, Remy Heise.
He was preceded in death by his father Herbert Paul Hoover.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the First Christian Church, 1429 St. Mary's Road in Junction City with Pastor Ronnie Roberts officiating. Burial will follow the service at Bethel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, March 23, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been designated to the American Legion, Post #45, 201 E. 4th Street, Junction City, KS 66441 and/or to the First Christian Church, 1429 St. Mary's Road, Junction City, KS 66441.
