Robert Grant, Sr.

Robert "Robbie" Grant, Sr., 72, of Junction City, passed away June 18, 2004 at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. Robbie was born on July 31, 1931 to Isaiah and Pearl (Norman) Grant in St. Bernard, Louisiana. He was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. Grant retired from military service with the rank of First Sergeant. While in the military he served in three foreign countries: Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. He was the recipient of numerous commendations while serving his country, including the Soldiers Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. After serving 20 years of service, he retired form the United States Army. Mr. Grant was also the past Worshipful Master of the Clarence Kimbrough Lodge #111, in Augsburg, Germany.

Robbie joined the Junction City Police Force on August 15, 1971 after serving on the Police Reserve unit for 13 months. Robbie retired after 24 years with the rank of Detective Sergeant of the Juvenile Division on April 9, 1990. Robbie was the Head Coach of the Tigress/Tigers Track Club for several years prior to his retirement and was also an Assistant Track Coach at the Junction City Middle School prior to his death.

Robbie married Helga Bischinger in Baumholder, Germany on November 21, 1955 and is survived by her. Other survivors include retired First Sergeant Robert Grant Jr., of MA, Linda Rodgers and husband George III of MD, LaVerne Grant-Smith and husband Barry of Junction City, Lorraine Hammond and husband Roger of Wichita, twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. One sister, one brother, Mama Bulla Hawkins of Philadelphia, PA and close family friend Harriet Mathis, also survive him.

Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel on Thursday, June 24, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. The family will be present from 6-7 p.m. The funeral services will be held on Friday, June 25, 2004, 12 p.m. at the Living Word of Christ Church, 1704 St. Mary's Road, Junction City. Pastor James Johnson will officiate the ceremony with son-in-law, Reverend George Rodgers III, presenting the Eulogy. The Junction City Police Honor Guard and Military Honor Guard will present Police and Military Honors. In lieu of flowers the family request that contributions be made payable to the KU Endowment Cancer Unit 42, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160-7804 and/or the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 1120 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO 64105 and/or the Robert Grant, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, P.O. Box 826, Junction City, KS 66441.
