Richard W. Barr, 95, of Junction city, KS passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Stoneybrook Care Center. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue, Junction City with Reverend Kenton Van officiating. Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. until service time. Burial will be held at Highland Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be given to the First United Methodist Church, 804 N. Jefferson, Junction City, KS 66441.
Richard Weldon Barr was born in Humboldt, KS on September 5, 1914 to James Chester Barr and Anna Elizabeth (Goloby) Barr. Brothers Lawrence, Harold, Chester and Clarence followed. The family made their home on a farm in Humboldt, KS.
On October 2, 1942, Richard married Dorothy Kathryn (Carson) Barr at her family home in Greenwood County, KS. Daughter Kathryn Ann (Barr) DePew was born in Joplin, MO. Dorothy preceded Richard in death January 9, 2009.
After graduating from Severy High School, Richard served as a medic in the Pacific theater of World War II working in the hospital on the island of Tinian. After returning from the war, Richard earned his Bachelor's and Master's degree in education. In 1957 he moved with his wife and daughter to Junction City, KS where he taught at Junction City High School. Richard retired from teaching in 1982.
He is survived by daughter Kathryn Depew and her husband Gary, of Junction City, KS, granddaughter Julie Rasmussen of Manhattan, KS, grandson, Gary Brian DePew and his wife Jill Martinson of Junction City, KS, great-granddaughters, Taylor Rasmussen of Manhattan, KS and Josslyn Martinson DePew of Junction City, KS, brothers, Lawrence Barr and his wife Loraine of Yates Center, KS, Chester Barr and wife Elaine of Everett, WA and Clarence Barr of Chanute, KS as well as many beloved extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and brother, Harold.
Pallbearers will be Chad Fechner, Pete Arceo, Gary B. DePew, Jim Barr, John Barr and Mike Barr.
Organist will be Florence Whitebread and Vocalist will be Cindy Carlyon
