Richard S. Jung, 79, of Junction City, KS passed away at the Holiday Resort Hospice in Salina, KS on May 26, 2012. Funeral services with military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street with Reverend Phil Fischer officiating. Burial will follow at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 30, 2012 from 6-8p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Memorial contributions have been designated to the American Legion Post #45, 201 E. 4th Street, Junction City, KS 66441.
Richard was born May 23, 1933, New England, North Dakota to Steven and Velma (Roe) Jung. He attended Tepee Butte county school and later the New England High School.
He joined the Army in 1950 and after basic training was sent to Korea where he served two tours of duty. On February 13, 1955 he was united in marriage at Mott, North Dakota to Glen Nora Dohn. They started their married life in Junction City, KS while Richard was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. In 1959 they went to Germany where he was stationed at Baumholder. In 1962 they returned to Fort Riley, KS.
In July of 1962 Richard's parents were killed in a car accident. He and Glen Nora then became parents to his younger sisters, Marlene and Veronica Faye who were 14 and 3 1/2. In 1965 Richard was sent to Vietnam for a tour of duty. Following his tour in Vietnam he was stationed back at Fort Riley, KS. He retired from the military in October of 1972 as a MSG.
During his time in the military he received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal w/BZ Clasps and 5LPS, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, National Service Medal w/1st OLC, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 DVC, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd AWD), Five Overseas Bars and the Army Commendation Medal.
Following his retirement he then began his second career at Valley View Nursing Home where he was in charge of the Food Service. He later became administrator of Valley Vista and Valley View Nursing Homes. He retired from his second career in 1994.
Richard was an avid fisherman and hunter. He and his family spent many weekends camping at Milford Lake, he also enjoyed attending sporting events where he was his grandchildren's biggest fan. He loved to spend time in his back yard where he would feed the "critters". He bowled for many years on the men's league and the double league and he was a very competitive pinochle player.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Eagle's.
He is survived by his wife Glen Nora of Junction City, KS, his daughter Roxanne (Michael) Whaley of Chapman, KS, grandson Aaron (Rachel) Whaley of Burleson, TX, granddaughter, Beth Whaley and Nathan of Junction City, KS and his biggest pride, his great-grandson Addox Whaley. He is also survived by his sisters Marlene (Jim) Mastin of Humble, TX, Agnes Dobitz of CA and Veronica Faye (Glenn) Cox of Monroe, WA, his sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Tom Kautzman of Mandan, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Alvera Mellmer and his brother Douglas Jung.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Dodd, Lanny Wolf, Earl Dreher, Ed Askren, Fred Meyer, Joe Belardo and Willie Thornberg.
