Funeral services for Rex R. Hunt, Sr., 98, of Dwight are set for 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, Junction City. Rex died December 30, 2013 at Mercy Health Center, Manhattan.
Rex was born February 3, 1915 in Chippewa Falls, WI., the son of Almon Asa & Mary Myrtle Smith Hunt. He attended schools at Mountain View, Missouri, and retired in 1962, after a 25 year career with Union Pacific Railroad as a Footboard Yardmaster. He and his wife lived in the Kansas City area until 1951, when they moved to the farm on Davis Creek. They had rental properties in Dwight from 1963 until 1999, when they entered full retirement. Rex enjoyed making custom lapidary jewelry out of Hunt's Rock Shop at the farm and did extensive traveling with his family. He and his wife were former leaders for the Skiddy Hustlers 4-H Club.
Rex married Helen S. Fiest on August 26, 1936 at St. Thomas Rectory in Kansas City, Kansas. She died May 11, 2002. Survivors include: 2 sons, Rex R. Hunt, Jr. and his wife Tammie, Joplin, Mo., and Robert A. Hunt and his wife Feithlinn, Ruth, Calif.; 3 daughters, Barbara Lee Burris and husband Carl Sr. of Clay Center, Mary Anna Granzow and husband Cary, Herington, and Tammy I. Altwegg and husband Scott, Junction City; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and several step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 granddaughter.
The family will greet friends 2 p.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, Junction City. The burial will be after the service Monday in the Dwight Cemetery.
