(Ret. SSG) Luis I. Rivera, 58, of Junction City, KS, transitioned to his heavenly home on August 28, 2016. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 1, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dove Cremation and Funeral Service, 805 Caroline Avenue, Junction City, KS, 66441. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016, 10:00 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Road, Manhattan, KS 66503. After the Graveside Service, close friends and family are invited to the VFW Post #8773 for a repass. Memorials are suggested to the VFW Post #8773, 1215 S. Washington Street, Junction City, KS, 66441.

He was born on April 27, 1958, in Manhattan, New York, to Facundo and Juanita (Vega) Rivera. He joined the United States Army in Humacao, Puerto Rico on July 18, 1984, and went on to retire in Fort Riley, Kansas on October 31, 2004.

On February 13, 1988 he married Shirreen Young. Shirreen and Luis retired in Junction City, Kansas, after traveling to many stations with the Army.

Luis was a member of Morris Hill Chapel at Fort Riley; VFW Post #8773, and The Masons Acacia Lodge #91.

He received the award of Allstar during his term as the Grand Commander of Kansas in the VFW Military Order of the Cooties (M.O.C.). As a Mason he achieved the honor of 32nd Shriner.

Luis was a family man. He loved spending time with his wife and children. His granddaughter Alaina will especially remember their fishing trips. Luis and his in-laws would cook dinner for the whole family and their friends. Everyone would gather around and make jokes and have a wonderful time. His hobbies included fishing, mechanical work, sports shooting, dancing, cooking Puerto Rican cuisine, lodge activities, and outdoor activities.

Luis is survived by his loving Wife, Shirreen, his Two Daughters, Juanita Shirreen Rivera of Junction City, KS, and Marcelina Imalda Rivera of Junction City, KS; Son, Luis Ivaldo Rivera, Jr. of Junction City, KS; Granddaughter, Alaina Ma'Lycia Henderson-Rivera of Junction City, KS; Brother, Juan Rivera of New York, NY; Sister, Carmen Rivera of New York, NY; Mother-in-law, Shirreen Young of Junction City, KS; Two Brother-In-Law, Charles Young, Jr. of Junction City, KS, (Ret. SFC) Lewis O. Young of Junction City, KS; Sister-In-Law, Mary L. Young of Cibolo, TX; Four Nieces, Toni L. Roberts of Cibolo, TX, DeAndra Young of Junction City, KS, Alicia M. Kline of GA, Brandy Young of Augusta, GA; Nephew, Lewis Young, Jr. currently traveling with the U.S. Army; and Beloved Friends, Jackie Norman of Junction City, KS and Seigh Norman of Junction City, KS.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Facundo Rivera and Father-in-law, (Ret. CSM) Charles E. Young.
