(Ret) SGM Michiel A. Burklund, 70, of Junction City, KS passed away at Geary Community Hospital on May 9, 2012. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with Chaplain Russell Sanders officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, May 14, 2012, 6p.m.-8p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue, Junction City, KS. Memorial contributions have been designated to the American Legion Post 45, 201 E. 4th, Junction City, KS 66441 and to the Disabled American Veterans, VA Hospital-Bldg#24, Room 106G, 2200 SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, KS 66622.
Mr. Burklund was born April 21, 1942, Clay Center, NE to Clifford and Fern (Carlson) Burklund. He joined the U S Army November 7, 1962 and retired October 16, 1984. He received several awards while serving including the National Defense Service Medal, the Merit Unit Citation, the Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit Award. Following his retirement he worked for Civil Service at Fort Riley for 17 years. He was a long time member of the American Legion Post 45.
He married Chong Sun Kim February 9, 1965 at Seoul, Korea.
He is survived by his wife Chong of Junction City, two sons; Brad Burklund and wife Reiko of Torrance, CA and David Burklund and wife Elizabeth of Minneapolis, MN, his sister, Muriel Fuller and husband Sam of St. Joseph, MO and his brother, Jerry Burklund and wife Devona of Sutton, NE and three grandchildren, Sara, Eleanor and Arthur Burklund.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
