Funeral services for (Ret) CSM Norman C. Jones, 70, of Milford, will be Saturday, March 5, 2005, 10 a.m. at the Main Post Chapel with Chaplain Nathan Zimmerman officiating. Visitation will be Friday, March 4, 2005, 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Mr. Jones passed away March 1, 2005 at Geary Community Hospital. Burial will be in Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors. Norman C. Jones was born in Dodge City, Kansas on May 4, 1934, to Durward L. and Edith I. (Evans) Jones. He graduated from Dodge City Senior High School in 1952. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, and attended basic combat training at Fort Riley, Kansas.
In September 1954, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii and served as a 31mm Mortar Gunnery Sergeant. Upon returning to the United States in December 1955, he was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, as Chief, Fire Direction Center and Platoon Sergeant, 81mm Mortar Platoon.
In December 1956, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion Combat Team in Iceland and served as the 81 mm Mortar Platoon Sergeant. Upon returning to the United States in December 1957, he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division and served as a Squad Leader and Section Sergeant in a battle group. In March 1959, he was reassigned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he served as an Assistant Platoon Sergeant and light weapons instructor in a basic training regiment.
In August 1960, he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany where he served as Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant in a rifle company.
In August 1963, he returned to the United States and was assigned to the high school ROTC in Casper, Wyoming, as an instructor. In September 1966, he returned to Fort Riley as a First Sergeant in the 9th Infantry Division and accompanied the Division to Vietnam.
In January 1968, he was assigned to Rock Falls, IL as a National Guard Advisor and in November 1969, he returned from Vietnam as the Sergeant Major of the USARV Advisor School. In November 1970, he returned to the United States and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a First Sergeant.
In June 1973, he entered the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, TX. In January 1974, he was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in Germany as the Command Sergeant Major. In March 1977, he returned to the United States and was assigned to the 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division as the Command Sergeant Major. And in August 1977, Command Sergeant Major Jones was selected as the 3rd Brigade Sergeant Major of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
In March 1978, Command Sergeant Major Jones assumed the position of Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. In September 1981, Command Sergeant Major Jones assumed the position of Command Sergeant Major at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
During his military career, Command Sergeant Major Jones received the following citations and decoration: Bronze Star Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal 8th Award, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign with 4 stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was also a member of the Retired Sergeant Major's Association.
He married Evelyn Trent August 4, 1953 in Ratone, NM, she survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Michael Jones of Groton, MA, and Randy Jones of Copperas Cove, TX; one daughter, Debbie Gifford of Shawnee, KS; one brother, Dale Jones of Aurora, IL; one sister, Donna Davis of McPherson, KS; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be provided by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Organist will be Florence Whitebread and vocalist will be Sandy Wong.
Bagpipe player will be Mr. Bobbie Dye.
