Pearl Gann "Nana" of Junction City, KS. passed away on Friday, June 13, 2014 at her home. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at Fort Riley Cemetery with Reverend Redo Purnell officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Friends of Animals, Junction City Animal Shelter or to the Meals-on-Wheels program at the Geary County Senior Citizen Center.
Pearl was born in Crab Orchard, TN. the daughter of Felix and Louisa (Patton) Whitehead. She was one of eleven children, all of whom have preceded her in death.
On October 29, 1948, she married Floyd Gann. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1976.
She moved to Junction City in 1964 with her husband Floyd who was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army stationed at Fort Riley. She worked at AAFES on Fort Riley as a cashier at the Main Post Cafeteria until her retirement. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 45 in Junction City and the Eastern Star Lodge in Fort Benning, GA.
She remained a Southern Belle at heart and was well known for her southern cooking, especially her fried chicken and biscuits. She was of an upbringing and generation that believed in hard work, never taking a hand out, honesty, and integrity. Her family was the most important thing in her life and she was always supportive of them. She was never judgmental and carried an overwhelming sense of pride in herself and love for everyone. She was the matriarch of her family and was so very loved, respected, and cherished. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Knowles. Her grandchildren, Thomas Knowles (Christine) and Christina Knowles. Her great grandchildren, Zan Bertolino (Lauren), Nathaniel Knowles, Cameron Knowles, and Garrett Knowles.
