Ozella Gillespie, 78, of Junction City, KS, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on April 4, 2020. Johnson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. In light of the recent world events, there will only be a private family gathering followed by burial at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery of Manhattan, KS.
Ozella was born on August 16, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York to Osborn and Matilda (Nolan) Brown-Bey. She grew up there attending the local schools and graduated from the Franklin K. Lane High School of Brooklyn. After high school, she attended NYU for two years. On July 7, 1962 she married her high school sweet-heart Lawrence Gillespie. Together they lived in many duty stations domestically and abroad. In 1982, Lawrence retired at Fort Riley, Kansas, after proudly serving over 20 years in the United States Army. They have since lived in Junction City, Kansas.
Ozella was a very creative woman. She was a craftswoman. She knitted, crocheted, and did many other handy projects. She was also an accomplished cook. Above all, she was a dedicated wife, loving mother, caring grandmother, and adoring great-grandmother.
She will be missed.
Ozella is survived by her loving family: husband, Lawrence of Junction City, KS, formerly of Brooklyn, NY; her son, Lawrence Gillespie, Jr. of Junction City, KS; daughter, Kim McGriff of Portsmouth, VA; 3 granddaughters; 2 great-granddaughters; fur baby Buddy of Junction City, KS; and a host of loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.
