Nelson R. Rivera passed away at his home in Junction City Monday, August 13, 2018, at the age of 62.
Nelson was born December 17, 1955, in Lorain, Ohio to Isidoro and Virgen Rivera. Nelson attended Lorain schools, graduating in 1974 from Admiral King High School. After graduation, he entered the US Army, military police, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. Nelson's love of law-enforcement led him to join the Junction City Police Department where he found his passion of working dogs when he became the canine handler of his notorious partner, Argos. Health problems forced him into medical retirement after 15 years. At this time, he assisted other vendors training K-9 police dogs. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed friends and family and adored his grandchildren. He was always a prankster, known for his mischievous smile.
Nelson was well known and respected in the law-enforcement community. His contributions continue today with many utilizing training that he shared with a glad heart. In 2002, Nelson and Lorayne started Rivera Police Canine, so he could remain involved in law-enforcement despite his progressive health problems. Nelson married his business partner and best friend, Lorayne Furrow on February 15, 2002, in Yates Center, Kansas.
Nelson offered pet obedience classes and helped people address problem behaviors no other trainers in the area had the expertise to rehabilitate. He called everyone he met friend.
Nelson and Lorayne also worked together transporting foster children for Saint Francis Community Services before his health continued to decline and he had to be cared for from home.
Nelson is survived by his beloved wife Lorayne; brother Michael Rivera of Elyria, OH; two sons, Matt Rivera of Dallas, TX, and Michael Rivera (Dawn) of Lancaster, CA; grandchildren Wyatt, Benjamin, and Emslie; two daughters, Amelia (Chris) Knapp of Junction City and Amanda Furrow of Abilene; niece Adel Rivera of Las Vegas, NV; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins all in OH and Puerto Rico.
