Nancy L. Hood Slaten, 83, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019.
A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Junction City on Sunday June 9, 2019 at 1pm. Visitation will be held at the church an hour prior to service from 12pm to 1pm.
Family and friends will gather for burial at Highland Cemetery in Junction City on Monday June 10, 2019 at 1pm.

Nancy was born July 9, 1935, in Junction City, KS, the daughter of William and Ina (Flower) Hood. She was baptized in April of 1936 in the First Presbyterian Church of Junction City. Nancy grew up in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1953. After high school she attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1957. While attending KU, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority International. She returned home to Junction City and began her career teaching second grade at Morris Hill Elementary on Fort Riley. She married John Waddell in June of 1957. They later divorced in 1962. Nancy then taught kindergarten at Westwood Elementary in Junction City from 1962 to 1967. During that time she married Dr. Larry Slaten in 1965. After her time as a teacher, she stayed deeply dedicated to education and served twelve years from 1977 to 1989 on the USD 475 School Board where she proudly served two years as President. She tirelessly worked as an advocate for children in the district. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Society, the American Association of University Women, and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church USA of Junction City where she served as an elder, taught Sunday school, and sang in the church choir. In her free time, she loved playing bridge with her bridge club. Nancy was not only active in the community, she was also a business owner. She proudly owned, managed, and operated the George and Bessie Flower Apartments in Junction City at the corner of 6th Street and Adams. The apartments were originally built by her grandfather George in the 1920's. In the 1990's she built and managed the three-plex on 5th Street. Nancy managed all her rental properties which included her parents' home until her death.
She will be dearly missed.
Nancy is survived by her loving family: her two daughters, Joan N. Slaten Robinson and husband James L. of Basehor, KS, and Lee J. Slaten Mullen and Nathan Sherraden of Parker, CO; son, Lane W. Slaten and Mary McMillin of Olathe, KS; four grandsons, CPT Ryan Robinson and wife Nicole, Kyle Robinson and wife Britiany, Brock Mullen, and Landen Slaten; great-granddaughter, Rikku E. Triggs; and a host of loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Slaten and her parents.
