A memorial service for (RET) MSG Merlin S. "Waylon" Jenkins, Sr., 69 of Milford, KS will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Mr. Jenkins passed away at Geary Community Hospital on November 29, 2009. Memorial contributions have been designated to
Merlin was born September 18, 1940, Sioux City, IA to Leo and Myrtle (Bunch) Jenkins. He joined the U S Army July 16, 1959 and retired March 31, 1984. While in the military he received the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, Silver Star Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal w/"V" 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), NCO Professional Development Ribbon "1", Overseas Service Ribbon "2", and the Vietnam Staff Medal 2nd Class. Following his retirement from the Army he worked for Schilling Construction.
He married Alaine K. Paul May 15, 1960 she survives of the home. Merlin was a lifetime member of the American Legion #45 and the VFW #8377 and Military order of the Purple Heart.
Other survivors include two sons; Merlin S. Jenkins, Jr. and John Spencer Jenkins both of Junction City, KS, four daughters; Linae Sissell of Junction City, KS, Lana Melton, Milford, KS, Lisa Swaim of Hutchinson, KS and Lea Hand of Abilene, KS, one sister; Marlis Rodriguez of Max Meadows, VA, sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sister-in-law Mary Lou Jenkins, Sioux City, IA and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leo, Jr., numerous nieces and nephews, friends and family.
