Mrs. Lucy Hilton Rhodes, 102, Junction City, KS passed away on October 16, 2012 at Valley View Senior Life Center.
Mrs. Rhodes was born December 29, 1909 in Coushatta, Louisiana to Mr. Charles Hilton and Mrs. Rachel Hilton. She was the beloved sister of Sam, Charles, Percy, Jessie and Dora, all of whom preceded her in death.
In February of 1929, Lucy united in marriage with Mr. Jessie Rhodes of Greenwood, Mississippi. Their union was blessed with the birth of their daughter, Jessie May Rhodes, of whom they lovingly referred as their "one and only".
Mrs. Rhodes eventually settled in Madison, Illinois, with her husband and daughter and became a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She faithfully served the Lord, and tirelessly supported her community wherever she was needed as a volunteer, a leader and a friend. She worked at Madison School District, Blair Elementary School until her retirement.
Upon the death of her husband, she moved to Junction City, Kansas to be near her daughter and family. She transferred her membership from Friendship Baptist Church to Second Missionary Baptist Church in Junction City, serving on the Deaconess Board. She received the distinguished award of being the oldest member of Second Missionary Baptist Church in 2009. She remained a member until her death.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Jessie M. Petty; her grandchildren, Cheryl Ferguson (Overland Park, KS), Henry L. Petty, Jr. and his wife Marjorie (Austell, GA), Mr. Derek E. Petty (Hanford, CA), Mr. DeAndre L. Petty (Wichita, KS); two great-granddaughters, Ms. Dashea Petty (Kansas City, MO) and Ms. Dominique Ferguson (Overland Park, KS), a great-great-granddaughter, Ms. Kayloni Petty (Kansas City, MO) and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10a.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Second Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor, Dr. Leonard F. Gray officiating. A Wake will take place on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 6p.m. to 8p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Burial will take place at 1p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012 at L.C.M.C. Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Greenwood, MS with the assistance of Century Funeral Home.
