Morris "Mo" Greenwood, 80, of Milford, KS died at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, KS on Sunday, December 10, 2017. His wake will be Friday, December 15, 2017 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St Xavier Catholic Church. A vigil service will take place at 6:40 p.m. with Fr. Gale Hammerschmidt presiding and Judy Rosa will lead the Rosary Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, December, 16, 2017 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Father Gale Hammerschmidt officiating, burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. A luncheon will follow immediately after the burial at the Knights of Columbus, 126 W. 7th street everyone is invited to the luncheon. In lieu of flowers memorial Contributions have been designated to the St. Xavier Catholic Church, 218 N. Washington Street, Junction City, KS 66441 and Quality Play for All, (for the development of the Junction City, 5th Street Park) P. O. Box 411, Junction City, KS 66441.
Mo was born May 23, 1937, Grand Island, Nebraska to Clair and Agnes (Loos) Greenwood. He was a graduate of Junction City High School Class of 1955 and attended Kansas State University.
While a ticket taker at a theatre in Junction City he met Beverly "Bev" Moritz, they married June 12, 1965.
In January 1968 Mo embarked on a career in insurance for Federated Insurance Companies and in 1988 Mo and several others founded the Insurance Group with offices in Grand Island, NE and Junction City, KS, the firm specialized in commercial risk management. He had also been a Mortician's Assistant, a railroad employee for Union Pacific Railroad in which he retired from, a part time educator in the public school system and was also a trainer and moderator for continuing education programs for the insurance industry. In1996 Mo spun off the Insurance Group of Junction City and developed risk management solutions mostly for agriculture and refined fuels insurance programs.
He spent 28 years in public service to his community as Milford City Council Member and Council president and as Mayor and also as a Geary County Commissioner. He actively promoted Junction City, Milford and Kansas with Junior Chamber of Commerce then Chamber of Commerce. Sharing this area with students and parents globally was one of his many highlights. Because of hosting an exchange for Rotary, he became a member of and district Governor elect for Rotary after serving a couple times as president of the Junction City Rotary. Mo was also very active in the Milford Lions Club as served as president for several years. He helped arrange a state Amtrak tour to Lions Centennial Convention to Chicago this past June, being ill didn't stop him from many activities. As Regional Chair he attended several leadership programs a the Convention. The State Lions Band Foundation was another of his many passions of which he was a member and promoted fundraisers.
He and Bev were chosen as Group Study Exchange Leaders for Rotary for five weeks to Brazil and out of that trip came over 19 Brazilian Exchange students and families. They traveled a dozen times to Brazil visiting families mostly in the state of Rio. One trip was to a Rotary District Convention to give a presentation about Rotary and the Exchange Program and there "Mo" was awarded a Humanitarian International Award. Over the years the Greenwood's hosted 55 exchange students and many of the students and their families have come back to visit the lovely area of Milford on the lake which they all loved.
Kansas State University sports occupied much of Mo's adult life, he had season football tickets for 53 years and he also attended many of the men's and women's basketball games and on occasion volleyball. He and Bev endowed a KSU Education Scholarship for a person from Geary County going into teaching They have also sponsored children through high school in Guatemala, Brazil and the Philippines, additionally, Rey of the Philippines was sponsored through a seminary and is now a priest.
Mo was dedicated to serving people and helping to make thing better, for 52 years he enjoyed learning, traveling, sharing and working with his wife Bev. They had no children of their own and they relished the opportunity to "spoil" their grandchildren all over the world and to stay very active in the fostering of the ideals of service throughout the world.
He leaves behind his wife Bev; his nieces, Nicole Greenwood, Shannon Greenwood and her husband Jake Zeka and children, Grayson, Wesley, Beckham and Lennon; his Sister-in-Law Angie (Steve) Roesler; Brother-in-Law, Gaylord (Shirley) Moritz, Sister-in-Law, Darlene Moritz and numerous nieces, nephews and exchange "sons and daughters" and their kids in many parts of the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Joe Greenwood.
