Moonie J. Singh, 88, of Junction City, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at her home in Junction City while under Hospice Care, surrounded by her loving family. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 10am (CST) at Flint Hills Church, located at 337 W. 7th St in Junction City. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Flint Hills Church or Good Shephard Homecare and Hospice of Manhattan.
Moonie Singh was born "Muniya Ramsawak" on May 4, 1933, on the island of Trinidad in the West Indies, the daughter of Ramsawak and Rookmin Kantu. She was the granddaughter of Indentured Servants who migrated from India to the Caribbean to work for the British in the late 1800's. One of ten children, Moonie was raised in a family that worked hard growing rice, coffee and cocoa to survive. She was a rebel of sorts, who went against tradition and completed her schooling, took classes on creating bridal bouquets and sewing, opened her own business and refused the traditional arranged marriage that was the norm in the Indian-Hindu community.
In her early 20's, Moonie became a Born-Again Believer in Jesus Christ, a decision that would drastically change her life. Bold in her faith, she encouraged a young man named Arjoon Singh, who had quite a crush on her, to attend a Christian Crusade service. After giving his heart to Jesus, Arjoon waited for Moonie outside the Crusade tent and told her, "Moonie, you are the person who is supposed to be my wife. No one had ever told me about Jesus before you". After years of pursuing her, Moonie finally agreed to marry him. Arjoon and Moonie were married on October 11, 1959, in Rio Claro, Trinidad.
Unable to have a child of their own, during the first thirteen years of their marriage, Moonie and her husband raised many of their nieces and nephews while operating a taxi business and bridal/flower business from their home. They were both founding members of their Pentecostal church and very active in spreading the Good News about Jesus in their community. Moonie taught children Sunday school, both at church and at private homes, and later became the Sunday School Superintendent in her church.
In the late 1960's, her husband came to New York City, NY to study welding and to work. In 1971 Moonie came to visit him in NYC. After listening to preacher Oral Roberts on radio for years, she saw him on the small television in their apartment for the first time. When Oral Roberts said, "Something GOOD is going to happen to YOU today!", Moonie placed her hands on the TV and asked God to bless her with a child. After 13 years of marriage, she became pregnant for the first time and gave birth at age 39 to her only child, Lisa. Thanks to the blessing of Lisa being born a United States Citizen, Arjoon and Moonie were able to obtain their U. S. Residency, and later their U. S. Citizenship.
Moonie and her family moved permanently to New York in 1974, settling in the Niagara Falls/Buffalo area. Moonie worked for Mister Donut and then Mount Saint Mary's Hospital, from which she retired, while being active in her local church teaching Sunday School. She cared for her husband during his six years on dialysis, and they spent the cold Buffalo winters in warm Fort Myers, Florida with family. After his death on September 13, 1999, in Buffalo, NY, Moonie moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida full-time with her daughter. Moonie was continually active in her church, New Life Assembly, helping with adult Sunday School, Ushering, and volunteering with The Bread Ministry. She also volunteered at the local hospital.
In 2017, Moonie moved to Junction City, Kansas to live with her daughter and son-in-law. While Parkinson's slowed down her body, her spirit remained strong. She loved to tell anyone and everyone she met about Jesus! Moonie loved to give and would visit neighbors with baked goods and a word of encouragement. There was not a child that crossed her path that did not walk away with candy, or some treat she had in her bag. Moonie loved going to the Geary County Senior Center, attending the exercise classes, special outings and events and fellowshipping with the Staff and other Seniors there. She loved her church family at Flint Hills Church. Most importantly, Moonie loved Jesus and was looking forward to Heaven. She desired that her life reflect Jesus and point others to Him.
Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Bailey and her husband Matthew of Junction City, KS: two brothers, Mohan Maharaj of Alberta, Canada and Punka Ramsawak of Tableland, Trinidad. Moonie was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
