Mona Jean Newbury, 83, of Junction City passed away on April 26, 2012 at the Sterling House of Junction City. A visitation will be held at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 N. Washington St. from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Junction City with Reverend Phil Fischer officiating. Burial will follow at the White City Cemetery in White City, Kansas. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to either the White City United Methodist Church, 204 W. MacKenzie, White City, KS 66872 or the Junction City First United Methodist Church, 804 N. Jefferson St., Junction City, KS 66441 or to The Sterling House of Junction City, 1022 Caroline Avenue, Junction City, KS 66441.
Mona Jean was born December 28, 1928, Morris County, KS to Glen S. and Margaret (Kamm) Worrell. She married George W. Newbury on December 11, 1944 at Council Grove, KS before he went to war. They lived in the Junction City Area for many years until Mona moved to White City, KS after losing George. In 2004, she made a move to Sterling House of Junction City to be near her family and then called it her home until her death. She became very involved in the programs and would be known to take your picture.
Many people would recall Mona Jean as being the checker with the biggest smile at A& P in Junction City. She than later went to work at Dillons and 1st State Bank.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church in White City and then upon moving to Junction City became a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was very committed to God and at times would share her love with the congregation to be known as "Mona Moments". She was also a 50 year old member of the Order of Eastern Star. During her marriage with George, both shared her love of horses by becoming a member of the Junction City Saddle Club.
Her family was her greatest pride and she is survived by her daughter Carol and husband Jerald Acker of Junction City, KS and two sons; Gary and wife Mary Newbury of Mansfield, Texas: and Jeffrey Newbury of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Six grandchildren; Natasha (David) Kelly, Joye (Sam) Gfeller, Melissa (Anton) Webber, Greg Newbury, Jordan Newbury and Jessica Newbury and seven great-grandchildren: Caitlyn and Shannon Kelly, Shailynn and Jacob Gfeller, and Alex, Zachary and Ethan Webber.
She was preceded in death by her husband George Newbury, one son Denny Newbury, one grandson Derald Acker and her brother Les Worrell, and sister Henrietta McConnan.
