Milton E. Rawlings passed away August 21, 2013 at Geary Community Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at Penwell-Gabel, 203 N. Washington, Junction City, KS, August 24, 2013 at 1000 AM. Full military honors will be presented and Father Jacob Davis, Ft. Riley, KS will officiate. Inurnment will take place at Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS at a later date.
Born Milton Ewan Rawlings, October 3, 1920, in Moran, KS to Levi and Lula Rawlings, he attended school in Moran and then joined the U.S. Army on August 16, 1937. His first duty assignment was with one of the last U.S. Horse Cavalry Troops at Ft Riley, KS. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
One of the highlights of his career, just prior to retirement was overseeing the burial and memorial to Chief "Old Trooper", the last U.S. Cavalry horse at Fort Riley. In August of 1969, he retired as Command Sergeant Major of Fort Riley.
In his retirement, Milt enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Rawlings. He is survived by his second wife, Katherine Rawlings, Junction City, KS and 4 stepchildren.
Other survivors include his two sons, Milton T. and wife Barbara Rawlings, Junction City, KS and John A. and wife Karin Rawlings, Evergreen, CO and daughter, Marsha A. Baird, Denver, CO. He leaves behind 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter whom he loved very much and they will love forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends and family to pay tribute to Milt's love of fishing, hunting, and the outdoors by making a donation in his name to the Geary County Fish and Game Association, P.O. Box 631, Junction City, KS 66441.
